The Trevor Walker Rural Health Scholarship was established by the PRIME Hui 2024 organising committee to acknowledge the contribution Dr Trevor Walker, rural General Practitioner, made in researching and establishing the concept of the PRIME (Primary Response In Medical Emergencies) course over 20 years ago.
The Trevor Walker Rural Health Scholarship was established by the PRIME Hui 2024 organising committee to acknowledge the contribution Dr Trevor Walker, rural General Practitioner, made in researching and establishing the concept of the PRIME (Primary Response In Medical Emergencies) course over 20 years ago.
Trevor took time away from his general practice in Te Anau to travel the country to develop this concept and wrote a report which designed a national pre-hospital acute management system, including rural primary healthcare providers, air and land ambulance services, to provide a co-ordinated response to local emergency care – he also coined the term PRIME. His report was adopted, and the PRIME service started in the South Island in 1998 and in the North Island two years later. This is one of the things in Trevor’s professional life that he feels most proud of, and the PRIME scheme has been described as a national initiative demonstrating different agencies working well together to provide acute accident and emergency care.

The Trevor Walker scholarship(s) are intended to assist current or potential PRIME practitioners to commence or gain higher qualifications to advance their PRIME responder skills, or to undertake further research in this specific area.

The PRIME Hui committee administers the Trevor Walker Rural Health Scholarship and will select recipients annually, at the PRIME Hui. The second recipient(s) of the Scholarship will be announced at the National Rural Health Conference 2025 to be held on Ōtautahi Christchurch from 2-3 May 2025.

Applications for the Trevor Walker Rural Health Scholarship will close on Friday 11 April 2025, at 5.00pm. If you are accepted as a recipient of this scholarship, you will be asked to provide proof of your selected training course, or research project, including quality, scope and significance of the proposed study or research project.
